Javier Bardem has been married to Penélope Cruz for fifteen years, and he still catches himself staring at magazine covers and thinking: is that actually my wife? The Spanish actor, 57, sat down with Variety for a wide-ranging cover story this week covering his upcoming projects, his activism and the kind of home life that most people only dream about, and what came through most clearly was a man who is genuinely, deeply in awe of the woman he married.

"She's a woman I'm so blessed by having had the chance to be at the same time, in the same place, in life," Bardem told the magazine. The words landed less like a rehearsed compliment and more like something he has thought about for a long time and finally said out loud.

Fifteen years and still completely smitten

Bardem did not hold back when Variety gave him the floor to talk about Cruz, 52. He described her first as a person before anything else, praising the way she shows up for the people around her with a consistency he has never seen waver.

"The way she relates to her family, to her friends, to our kids, to me, to herself. It's been a lot of years, and I haven't seen a hint of malice in her. On top of that, she's amazingly f---ing beautiful!"

He went on to describe the surreal experience of seeing his wife photographed on magazine covers, a feeling that clearly has not worn off with time. "When I see her being photographed on some magazines, I go, Is that my wife? Jesus, is it? It must be!" The delivery is equal parts disbelief and delight, the words of someone who still cannot quite process his own good fortune.

A love story that started on set in 1992

Bardem and Cruz first crossed paths on the set of the 1992 Spanish film Jamón, Jamón. It would be years before their personal lives eventually aligned, but when they came together, it clearly stuck. The couple wed in 2010 after appearing opposite each other in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and have since built a quiet, grounded family life in Madrid with their son Leo and daughter Luna.

Family first, always

Bardem was candid in the Variety interview about the non-negotiables he has put in place to protect his family life, even as both he and Cruz continue to take on major projects. He said the only factor he genuinely weighs when deciding on a role is whether it will take him away from his family for more than two weeks at a time. Since becoming parents, one of the two has always stayed home in Madrid while the other works.

Working on Bunker together in their home city offered something different and something the couple clearly needed. Filming together gave them the rare gift of sustained, intentional time with each other in a way that regular domestic life does not always allow.

"Because sometimes you are immersed in your daily stuff and the kids and the house, and it's like, when do you sit down and look at each other again? When do you start to breathe again, and take the other person in?"

At home, he added, work stays mostly at the door. "We don't talk much about work," Bardem said, "though we love what we do. We try to compartmentalize life and fiction." It is a boundary that has clearly served them well across fifteen years of two very high-profile careers running in parallel.

What is coming next for Bardem

The Variety cover story comes at a busy moment professionally for Bardem, with several major projects on the horizon in 2026.

Javier Bardem upcoming projects

  • Cape Fear limited series with Amy Adams, premiering on Apple TV on June 5, 2026
  • The Beloved, directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, premiering at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2026
  • Bunker, directed by Florian Zeller, filmed in Madrid alongside Penélope Cruz
  • Dune: Part Three, reprising his role as Stilgar, in theaters December 18, 2026
  • Porto Rico, a project with Residente

Bardem described Bunker, which reunites him with Cruz on screen, as "a marriage story." Given everything he said about his real one in this Variety interview, it is hard not to wonder how much of himself he brought to that set each day. Based on his words, quite a lot.
