Griffith made his Broadway debut in 1955 with No Time for Sergeants, earning a Tony Award nomination for his role as an air‑forced driftee. He transitioned to film with a strong debut in A Face in the Crowd (1957) and appeared in the 1958 adaptation of No Time for Sergeants. A second Tony nomination followed in 1959 for the musical Destry Rides Again.

His television career reached its peak with the long‑running sitcom The Andy Griffith Show (1960–68), which showcased his portrayal of a kindly sheriff in the fictional town of Mayberry. The series’ success led to a 1986 reunion program, Return to Mayberry, which became the highest‑rated show that year. Later, Griffith starred as the astute defense attorney Ben Matlock on the eponymous series (1986–95). He also appeared in several films during this period, including Daddy and Them (2001), Waitress (2007), and Play the Game (2009).

Griffith received a Grammy Award in 1997 for Best Southern Gospel, Country Gospel, or Bluegrass Gospel Album with I Love to Tell the Story—25 Timeless Hymns.
