Johanne Luise Heiberg (born November 22, 1812, Copenhagen – died November 22, 1890, Copenhagen) was a Danish actress and theatre manager who played a leading role in the development of Danish stage culture during the nineteenth century.
Early Life and Education
Heiberg grew up in Copenhagen where her father operated a tavern and billiard parlour. She began performing at an early age, singing for patrons in the family establishment. Her talent was recognized locally, leading to her debut as a singer‑dancer at the Royal Theatre when she was fourteen years old.
Career
In 1828 Heiberg portrayed Agnete in the vaudeville production Elverhøj, which became an enduring success and is noted for inspiring the Danish National Anthem. She continued to rise as a prominent actress on the Royal Theatre stage, excelling in both classical works and contemporary musical pieces. After retiring from acting in 1864 following the death of her frequent co‑star Michael Wiehe, she directed productions until 1879 and encouraged playwright Henrik Ibsen’s later plays to premiere at the Royal Theatre.
Achievements
Heiberg was regarded as the preeminent actress of her era, attracting a coterie that included leading figures in Danish intellectual life. Her influence extended beyond performance; she managed theatre productions and facilitated the careers of other artists. She authored an autobiographical work in four volumes, A Life Relived in Recollection, which was published posthumously between 1891 and 1892.

In 1831 Heiberg married playwright Johan Ludvig Heiberg, aligning her personal life with a prominent literary figure. The couple shared a professional partnership that contributed to the cultural milieu of Copenhagen. Their marriage lasted until her death in 1890.
