Morris Louis was a pioneering Color Field painter best known for works such as “Where” and his series of Veil Paintings.
Early Days
Born and raised in Baltimore, he earned a scholarship to the Maryland Institute College of Art (1929–1933) but left before completing his studies. He worked in the easel division of the Works Progress Administration in New York from 1936 to 1940.
Fun Facts
Louis destroyed most of his own work between 1955 and 1957, a dramatic act that reflected his evolving artistic philosophy. He was one of the founders of the Washington Color School movement.
Family Life
In 1947 he married Marcella Siegel, with whom he shared a lifelong partnership (inferred).
Collaborations With
Louis worked alongside contemporaries such as Jackson Pollock, contributing to the vibrant New York art scene of the mid‑20th century.
